The row about the presence of horse meat in various “beef” products isn’t, or shouldn’t be, really about horse meat. The problem is that there could be other contaminants, including drugs used on horses, not to mention other species. If we are kept ignorant even of the presence of horse meat, that meat could have come from any horse, in any condition.
The irony is, properly produced horse meat is widely considered a healthier option than beef, and I wouldn’t mind trying some.
I’d want to be assured of its quality though, and so I’d want to know something of its provenance. That’s a bit difficult when only the place of the assembly of ready meals needs to be mentioned on the packaging, and not the place of origin of the ingredients.
